How to get from Lindon to London

This was my essay for my London application:

Earl Nightingale once said, “Getting an education is the best thing anybody could ever do.” I am a Marriage and Family Life Major at BYU. I think about this quote every day. Professors in the school of family life consider the best way to raise a family is through authoritative relationships. An authoritative relationship in a family is a parenting style in which the parents encourage a child’s independence and autonomy, while placing certain limitations or restrictions on the child.  To effectively apply this ideal relationship style into my future life, career, and family, I have come to the conclusion that the best way to become an authoritative figure is to gain a well rounded education.

                Living in Utah County for most of my life has limited my exposure to non-Mormon cultures. Getting out of Utah County in and of itself is a great way to expand my awareness of the world. Taking it to the next level, getting out of the country would induce further world awareness. Particularly learning about London history, art, and fashion will help me gain a not-so-sheltered outlook on life. A lot of the history of the world was influenced by the happenings in England. Historical events teach us about individual relationships and human nature.  The center of life is human relationships; as we study history we learn about past human interactions that allow us to better our communication skills which are vital to becoming a cultured individual. The incredible art found in London similarly teaches new philosophies and spurs creativity of thought. Art and History can show us new ways to understand human nature, and new philosophies that influenced our past, present and future. What excites me most about London is the fashion. I studied fashion merchandising in high school and am currently studying clothing construction. Fashion is my passion. London as a center of fashion has influenced the world. The fascinating thing about fashion is how it has changes throughout time. The theater in London is spectacular because it shows different time periods and the changing world styles. I am excited to see real life examples of different trends throughout history.

Gaining a greater knowledge of the history, art, humanities, and fashion in London will bring new and incredible views to my understanding of life and the relationships I build.  This once in a life time opportunity will cultivate development in every aspect of my life. I look forward to meeting new people, gaining new friendships, and building a stronger understanding of the impact of London history and theater.

"Your assessment of London as the center of fashion and theatre as the place where you can see fashion in many contexts is spot on. Add to theatre the many museums and galleries that you will see, and your life and education will be enhanced richly by this experience."
